Popcorn for the Philippines 2014

The Sixth Form Charity Committee has been working hard this year. Along with initiatives to raise money for RNIB and Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital, students were also passionate about getting involved in the Disasters Emergency Committee(DEC) fund for the Philippines.

Typhoon Haiyan was 300 miles across when it struck the Philippines on the 8th of November and one of the most intense tropical storms to ever make landfall anywhere in the world. It brought torrential rain, sustained winds of over 195mph and a storm surge of up to 30 feet that devastated coastal areas. There are millions of people who have been affected, including hundreds of thousands who have been made homeless and those who have survived now need urgent help including emergency shelter, clean water and food. Some of which will be provided by Kingsley Academy after the group raised £178 for the DEC by selling popcorn at lunch and break times.

As part of the Charity Committee, Students have also raised over £70 for Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital on the last day of term before Christmas, Staff and members of the sixth Form were encouraged to donate £1 to wear their Christmas jumper to school for the day. This money paid the cost of a family being able to stay together over Christmas while one of them received lifesaving treatment.
