Last year’s winner Richard Kurti was present to announce the winner. He talked about some life experiences and how he became a novelist and the challenges he encountered along the way. He gave some background information for his ideas for his two books ‘Maladapted’ (last year’s winner) and ‘Monkey Wars’.

The students were very enthusiastic about their experience. Year 7, Polya said, "I think the trip to meet Richard Kurti was really helpful and inspiring. He gave some insight into how he became a writer and what was involved." Year 9, Rayyan added, "I really liked the whole idea of Hounslow Teen Read. Reading the 6 books on the shortlist was interesting, since I had an opportunity to read different genres and explore books and authors that I wouldn’t normally have read. Meeting Reichard Kurti was also fun, since it highlighted the unique world of screen writers."
